Blactivision is the new Squeenix

Blizzard and Activision are merging.

This announcement is pretty much sending shock waves through the gaming industry. This post on the WoW general forums promises that nothing is changing.

This post has the details. (FAQ)

The new company is going to be called Activision Blizzard, which is about the most unexciting thing I've ever heard. Why not Blactivision? Or...Activizzard? (Ok, maybe not.)

The general consensus on the internet right now is, there are going to be some unfavorable changes thanks to the almighty dollar, no matter what they're saying now.

PS: Activision Blizzard will be on the NASDAQ. I'll probably buy some.

When I read this on gamepolitics I literally yelled out WHAT THE FUCK!? At the time there were 4 other people in the room and I had to explain that I was the biggest geek in the whole residence.

anyways... This merger has caught everyone by surprise and it doesn't make much sense to me. After reading all the interviews and faqs about it I still don't see what exactly is going to change. Maybe future projects will have Activision and Blizzard studios working together. That worries me because I don't want anyone messing with sacred Blizzard games.

In other news: I can't get over the firing of Jeff Gerstmann. I am so pissed right now at Gamespot (Cnet) which has been my homepage and most visited site for years. Gerstmann has always been the face of Gamespot! They are effectively decapitating themselves for some extra advertising cash (that will go to pay for the mass account cancellation from their site)

I would boycott GS if I had the mental power to resist clicking the bookmark whenever I go online. Yeah that's not going to happen.

Hey man, yeah I was going to make a mention about Jeff Gerstmann but didn't because I've never been a big Gamespot person and only vaguely knew who he was beforehand. Nonetheless, I'm with you and Dennis and everyone else on this one: boo Gamespot, boo.

I was shocked too see so many people outraged at the announcement. Its Vivendi universal acquiring another company into its mass amount of subsidiaries that it owns. No one would be the wiser if they hadn't announced it.

The whole 'merger' part is in the name only, really. It's just going from an independent developer (afaik) to one owned by Vivendi's Vivendi games unit. This means roughly the same as when blizzard was acquired by Vivendi. As long as Blizzard is generating profits, shareholders are happy and thus no external factors come into play (Vivendi).

The addition of Activision is much the same. As long as they're making good profits, (and they have been on titles like GH and CoD), there's no reason for intervention by Vivendi.

The only thing that will change will be a few logos on doors and such.

As far as Gamespot goes Pete, I've always regarded that site as trashy. The cluttered site layout and excessive advertising never made it appealing to me.
